Brad Cooper Gallery is pleased to feature a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Seattle-based artist ERIC MONTOYA, titled “FLOATING VISIONS.” An opening for the exhibition will be held on Saturday, September 29, from 6 to 8pm. The works will be on view through October 31, 2007. Brad Cooper Gallery is located at 1712 E 7th Ave in Ybor City. Gallery hours are Wed – Sat 11am - 5pm. Included in the exhibition are numerous examples of previous works from Montoya’s portrait series of perennial garden, landscape-still-life imagery. In the current show the predominant images have evolved into a landscape-bird-sky subject matter, which was beginning to emerge in work from his previous exhibition. These recent paintings exemplify, the best of his evolving vocabulary and technique. ‘My new paintings continue to reveal my love of portraiture, nature and the subconscious. The work delves into ways of addressing the subliminal tension between nature and the personality of the sitter. I am continuing to push the normal boundary between the viewer and the painting.”
“The dialogue connecting my imagery was challenged after an experience on a trip to China in 2006, where I attended a performance of floating acrobats, who with ribbons, flew like a birds. In my work these humans have become a flock of birds and a metaphor for a how we relate to one another in our increasingly complex social and cultural environment. This experience is portrayed in the painting titled Floating Visions.” ERIC MONTOYA Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, (1968) living his early formative years with his Chicano grandparents and extended family, he moved to south eastern Idaho. It was there he grew up loving nature and good minded people but disliking the oppressive nature of a closed minded society. His love of art and desire to live in more progressive community, took him to Seattle, Washington where he furthered his education during his studies at the Seattle Art Institute. Brad Cooper Gallery has represented Eric Montoya’s work in the region since 2005 and is excited to present his second solo-exhibition on the east coast . |
