Brad Cooper Gallery is pleased to present “LANDSCAPE IN THE POSTMODERN”, a juried exhibition featuring thirty-five artists whose works were chosen from one-hundred submissions. The exhibit was selected by Chicago art critic, artist and educator Corey Postiglione.  The intention of this exhibition is to enlarge the understanding of our culture and society through the reconsideration of landscape imagery produced today.

The show includes painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking and photography and will be on view from August 12, through October 7, 2006.   AWARDS: A solo-exhibition ($8,000. value) will be the given for Best of Show. Second prize: $500.00, and two honorable mentions $100.00 each will also be awarded.  The juror’s decisions are to be announced at the opening reception for the artists, Saturday evening, August 12, 2006,  from 7 to 9 p.m.  This event is free and open to the public.

“This exhibition, “Landscape in the Postmodern” attempts to reconsider the implications of the Landscape in our culture and provides a look at how artists perceive, reconstruct, and distinguish the Landscape. An exhibition of this scope and caliber is an invaluable opportunity for the public, collectors and artists to expose themselves to artists working in the region, nationally, and across the globe”.

THE POSTMODERN LANDSCAPE
Corey Postiglione poses the question, “What is it that constitutes a postmodern representation of landscape?  What establishes this new visual and philosophical view of the natural world that in some way breaks with the past of this well rehearsed subject and goes beyond the recent experimentations of the modern tradition?  In order to shed light on this question one has to look to the current state of nature itself and the shifting attitudes that inform artist’s attempts to represent it.  “The Landscape as a genre of artistic practice has been represented in a myriad of styles and media down through the ages. This fascination with the Landscape continues to be explored even into the 21st century and the epoch commonly referred to as the postmodern.”  complete essay available

Corey Postiglione is a painter, critic, curator, and teacher living in Chicago. In addition to being a professor of Art History and Critical Theory at Columbia College, Postiglione is a member of the American Abstract Artists, New York and the Chicago Art Critics Association. His writing has appeared in numerous publications including Artforum, The New Art Examiner, C-magazine, and Dialogue.
