ARTIST STATEMENT

  Maya Chachava

My recent body of work evolves around medium scale formats that explore illusionistic space. I combine drawing and painting materials together, trying to respond and use their respective properties. The notion of distance between marks is fascinating to me and opens up challenging possibilities,

My main objective as I enter the studio- is always to resolve visual problems. I believe that by attending first to formal elements in my work- I am ultimately able to create both: expressive quality and meaning.

I fully rely on the process of painting and my imagination.

As I paint I always try to search for a mid realm, alternative explanation or belief, where imagination is taken seriously, though not literary.

Although most of my paintings have titles, they are never preconceived apriori.
The title emerges at the very end when there is nothing else I can add or take away.
