Both collectors and artists are rediscovering the rewards and pleasures of drawing, the activity which Cennino Cinnini in the 14th century considered “both the necessary foundation of practice for all and a natural intellectual inclination of the talented.” Artists draw as a means of investigation and experimentation and to learn how-to-see the world by making marks on paper. For the viewer, this exhibition approaches drawing in a broad sense; to extend ones perception of the common notion of drawing and to broaden the understanding of the concepts, potentialities, and processes involved in making a drawing. For an artist the medium becomes a responsive encounter, as drawing reflects an interpretation of the observed subject or the invented subject. It is drawing that nourishes the artist’s vision, generating new ideas, emotions, and empathic interpretations. In a unique way, time after time, drawing can evoke memory. For the artist, drawings contribute to what shapes artistic vision, and for the viewer, drawings provide insight into the artistic practice of the visual artist.
