2004 BIENNIAL JURIED EXHIBITION

July 24 - September 25,  2004

Brad Cooper Gallery is pleased to present the “2004 BIENNIAL JURIED EXHIBITION”, an international show featuring fifty-three artists (see other side) whose work will be displayed within two galleries, one featuring painting; including mixed media, and the other featuring works on paper; including drawing, watercolor, printmaking, photography, and digital imagery. The exhibition will be on view from July 24 through September 25.

Each exhibition will receive an Award for Best of Show, which will feature the artist in a future solo exhibition. Second prize ($500.) and two honorable mentions ($100.ea.) will also be awarded within each respective exhibit.  The Awards Juror’s decisions are to be announced at the opening reception for the artists to be held Saturday evening, July 24, 2004,  from 7 to 9 p.m.

This exhibition has been selected by the Gallery staff and reflects a cross section of the diverse interpretations of contemporary imagery.  The artists featured portray an experienced sensitivity towards the psychology of subject matter and the manipulation of a wide variety of media.  An exhibition of this scope and caliber is an invaluable opportunity for the public, collectors and artists to expose themselves to current artists working in the region, nationally, and across the globe.

The Awards Juror, James McGarrell is a highly influential artist whose work spans six decades and two continents.  In addition to his works being included in the permanent collections of such prestigious institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, he has exhibited in five Whitney Museum Annuals and Biennials, two Carnegie International exhibitions, Documenta in Kassel, Germany, the Dunn International at the Tate Gallery, London, as well as other respected exhibitions of international importance.  His awards are numerous and among the most prestigious are the Fulbright Grant received in the beginning of his career in 1955, the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1964, the National Endowment for the Arts Grant in both 1967 and 1985, and his election as a Corresponding Member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts de L’Institute de France in 1970.   He taught in the graduate painting program at Indiana University for over twenty years and spent his last twelve years teaching at the Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, of which he is currently professor emeritus.  During his sabbaticals, McGarrell would spend time at his studios in France, Italy, and New York City.  He now devotes most of his time with his wife Ann, a poet and translator, in their restored 19th century home and studio in Newbury, Vermont.

It is an honor for the Brad Cooper Gallery and the participating artists to have the opportunity to receive the insight of an individual who has participated and contributed to the contemporary art movement of the past sixty years and whose work is permanently included among the most valued collections in the world of art.
