ARTIST STATEMENT

ILGIM VERYERI

My work is lyric mixed media pieces. While it is true that the sea inspires me, the artwork also represents inner self-portraits. These self portraits are created on paper using etching, chine-colle, collage, poetry and Turkish marbleizing: Ebru. My goal is to illuminate the relationship of the outside to the inside, the exterior world to my inner world which is material, spiritual, mystical, mysterious and mundane.

I hope to clarify and expand my perception of my environment, not only with my eyes but also with all of my senses. As mathematician Rudy Rucker says, I am, as it were, an eye that the cosmos uses to look at itself. The mind is not mine alone; the mind is everywhere.” Since the world starts in us, not outside of us, I try to bring my own energy, and spirit into my work.
