ARTIST STATEMENT

HELENA RUBINSTEIN

My work reflects my search for presence and belonging which comes from the determination of the space in which I create. The process is a journey that takes me from places of waiving and forsaking to places of return and existence. In every   place I leave something from myself and I take something to myself. There is no reaching, only a continuity of forming.

I paint to embody the questions, what is life?  What is real? What is love? Where does it begin and where does it end? What are the lines between? Sometimes it seems like a truth of a dream and an illusion of life…

Reality is after all, only a momentary combination of events on a huge ball, full of infinite possibilities that would never become real, that every one of them could tell us a completely different story about ourselves, about our loves and about our life.

I work intuitively and instinctively. I experience painting like a dancer experiences a dance; I feel it in my body, I take the space on the canvas, going with it to see where will it lead. Sometimes it leads me to a place I like, that I haven’t been in before.

In the process I surrender to uncertainty… like flying away…
