DERRICK RILEY

The reflection of life, both as subject and Metaphor, affects how I perceive the world and how it works.  Our culture is problematic, repetitive, and controlled. Consequently my work reflects these characteristics.

Life in some shape or form is mostly repetitious, and repetition is the basic function of machines.  These machines, more specifically robots, go through some troubling procedures, which is meant as a representative of life’s moral and societal problems and obstacles, such as human nature or dependencies.  As important as I feel the robots are to my work, the images that connects it to life are the actions and procedures that the robots are performing.  The robots are meant to be the replacement for the human race, but at the same time are basically man in a robot's skin.  My use of  cartoon-type imagery and flat comic book like colors serves as a deterrent from the problems that are being presented.  This too is a reflection of life - the images and colors soften the problem in order to make them more acceptable, similar to how society deals with these very same problems.
