ARTIST STATEMENT

STEPHANIE MARIA

It is with fascination of the gap between the manufactured view of American life, and our real-life experiences that I approach my artist’s vision.  I explore the world of subjective news reporting, historical myths, and fear based marketing. Our country is a vast and complex mix of cultures and beliefs, but its’ blissful march to conformity is what interests me.

I create metaphors for the victims and the players of our society, by borrowing the printed images of animals and human figures found on toille fabric and other sources. Just as the darker climate of life pulses beneath decorative veneers in a well appointed home, the layers of pattern, figures and "paint vandalism" in my paintings begin to create opposing realities. Despite the vigorous efforts to maintain a certain design, The laws of nature will produce the unexpected "stain"  and the opposition will emerge.

The investigation of subtle and blatant propaganda, the human condition, and the poetic expression of these contrasts in my paintings, is the spiritual force in the production of my artwork.
