ARTIST STATEMENT

ANN JOHNSON

The earth is my subject. Its energy, resilience and tenacity inspire me. It exudes life, which I try to translate into my work. I do close studies, often abstractions cropped from larger images. I find one design, line, texture to enlarge and bring to the viewer’s attention. I am drawn to roots, rocks, mesa walls, and desert places.

This image is about the flow and sensuality of roots. Roots are solid and graceful; exuding strength and motion, along with a sense of enormous time.  I try to capture the vigor expressed by these tendrils of life. They carry the fragrance of earth, moisture and growth.

A design of wooden tapestry across the ground, we can only imagine how deep they dig, and the spirits that live between them... I find this beauty and mystery very exhilarating. And I wish to share this “life” as a soft music in our very busy world.
