Having been raised in Connecticut, attended college in New Hampshire, the draw for adventure and new experience was large. For much of my twenties, I worked in Boston for money, then hitch-hiked and youth hostelled thru Europe, N.Africa, the Middle East and India, S.E. Asia to Australia. I had little money, no camera, but the eyes were opened and with journals/notes galore I still can see the images of other worlds, especially the physical realities. By my late twenties I was, to my surprise, married and living in Connecticut. Always interested in the natural world, I began to create one, with extensive gardens and a nurseryman husband who obviously shared the interest. We both love woods and mountains, wildlife and flora, so we have traveled several months each year - I began finally traveling WITH a camera, a 30-year visual journey. Passion and a desire to find little “events” that could be easily passed by. The Earth became my permanent subject, to see in all ways possible. And to share what I found. Photographer Ken Druse urged me to take this seriously, and I began with B & W darkroom courses, polaroid/emulsion transfer classes, and workshops in general. I was invited finally to hang several exhibits, which forced the need for a strong theme, a “body of work”. I focused closer and closer, whether on a flower or a mesa wall, seeking design within an image, cropping into a separate, often abstract piece. It became a departure from the literal. The icebergs of Antarctica took me further into abstraction. And rich color. Currently I use a Nikon 35 mm and digital cameras, with the ability to scan into my computer. With Adobe I enhance, crop and enlarge, mirror images. My subjects are always the earth, preferably its wilder parts. A trip to Japan this fall will force a bit of “controlled nature” into my repertoire, which perhaps will be a challenge and definitely inspiring. |
