Born in Boston, Massachusetts, September 15, 1946, we soon moved to Baltimore, Maryland where I spent most of my youth and adolescence. My parents loved art, music and the Bible, the love of which was encouraged in our home. I loved watching my mother draw and soon she was seeing I had lessons, as I spent summers in the downtown Baltimore studio of Hans and Ann Schuler learning drawing and painting from the old masters. I was accepted at The Museum School of Fine Arts, connected with The Boston Museum in Massachusetts where I majored in painting during 1964 – 1966. Continuing my studies in London, England, I explored the area of dance, attending Ballet Rambert School from 1968 – 1969. Upon returning to Boston after six months in Paris I continued studying dance in classes at The Boston Conservatory and a private dance studio from 1969 – 1970. I was introduced to photography through an experimental collective darkroom started by enthusiastic graduates from the Rhode Island School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts, called Imageworks. With much encouragement I started showing work, winning a second prize in the Northeastern Regional Photography Show juried by Peter Brunell. From this period in the early 70’s some of the black and white work was purchased for several collections including 1972 – The Museums of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; 1973 – The Addison Gallery, Andover, Massachusetts; 1974 – The Museum of Modern Art, New York, N.Y. In 1978 I was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant in photography. |
